  3. Steve is a top man! Brought two of my guitars in the morning and had them perfectly done in 4-5 hours. Very proffesional and great conversation. He went an extra mile with the guitars as well and tried to sort few others problems out too.

Definitely I’ll be a regular customer.

  4. Took my newly acquired Seagull S6 Original Burnt Umber model to Steve. It played OK beforehand but after Steve had done a proper set-up it was like velvet. Great to find someone who cares about other peoples guitars and gets the best out of them. Will be taking my other acoustic to Steve in the next few weeks.

  5. Fantastic work on my treasured Fender Stratocaster. I had bought a brand new neck and a humbucker which needed wiring in. Steve completed the work for a very reasonable price, did the job within a day and presented me with an instantly playable guitar with perfect action and intonation. He had also identified a few minor issues which I hadn’t even noticed and sorted them out at no extra cost. He offered friendly, helpful advice about aftercare for the new neck and put my concerns at ease. Highly recommended, many thanks!

  6. Thanks for setting up my Yamaha acoustic-electric bought from a good shop in Manchester but requiring a professional set up to play it at all! A brilliant job and I would recommend Steve to anybody who wants to find out how they can play even better on their chosen instrument.

  7. Could not recommend more. Spoke to Steve about loss of signal within my Fender Jaguar as a emergency repair. Dropped it off at his house, took it into work and fixed it, available the next day. Steve also looked at other issues with the guitar I didn’t even know I had! Great service, great guy and great price!

Steve was very calming as I was worried about having the guitar for an event the next day. After an hour it was fixed. Loads of free advice about how to keep my guitars in top playing condition was given as well. Steve really understands what musicians need and want. He’s easy to work with and really friendly and helpful.

  11. I always take my guitars to Steve whenever they need setting up and he always sorts things out quickly and at a very reasonable price!

I’ve had general set ups carried out, niggling issues (fret buzz, intonation etc.) sorted and even had the pickups changed in one of my guitars by him and I couldn’t be happier with the service.

100% recommended for any guitarist / bassist!

  13. I took a punt on buying a Savannah Mandolin online. Nice instrument, but I could not get the bridge set up to get the instrument playing in tune. The nut was too high, the bridge was too high and the neck was slightly twisted. I left it with Steve on Saturday afternoon and he fixed it superbly by the next day for me, all for £40. Brilliant! Thanks.

  14. I was really nervous about leaving my Rickenbacker short scale 12 string Lefty with anyone having spent an age and a fortune buying it but Steve was really helpful. We agreed to meet today at a given time and he was there ready to go. I presented him with three problems and he fixed them all in double quick time and for a very reasonable sum.
That jangle is back and I’ve worn my fingers down running through my collection of Byrds tracks and the odd Indie tune too (Slight Return by the Bluetones suits the Ricky so well).
Many thanks Steve and keep up the good work – real artisans like you are becoming so rare these days. I’ll be back with the other guitars when they need fixing.
    Best wishes
    Kev

  17. Steve – you are a bloody star! Thank you for fixing-up the Hudson mandolin with new machine heads and tailpiece and setting-up the Eastwood Warren Ellis signature electric tenor guitar for me. You are so helpful, knowledgeable and reasonably priced, it’s ridiculous! I’ve also invested in some boiled linseed oil and have switched all of my guitar straps to the right way around! Really enjoyed our chats too – will keep spreading the word about you and how helpful you are and hope to see you again soon. Cheers and thanks again. Steve.

  19. I recently bought a Savannah SR-550 resonator from Steve; it was originally right handed, but Steve converted it to left hand for me.

    1. It cost £130 less than the list price, apparently due to it having a blemish/fault, although I’m yet to spot anything.
    2. I was going to use it exclusively for slide in open G, but I thought I’d try it in standard tuning and I’m glad I did; when finger-picking, it sounds brilliant, a cross between a banjo and a guitar and definitely one to use at gigs.

All in all, I’m well chuffed with it, so thanks Steve!

  20. I took my left hand1980’s Guild Starfire IV to get repaired and was so nervous about letting it into the hands of anyone because it was so hard to find in the first place but Steve really knew his stuff: he told me the problem, did the job within two hours and gave a no hassle service. I’ll definitely be going to Steve for any issue I have in the future. Great guy, good to talk to so thanks a lot Steve!

  21. I got in touch with SJL through a Gumtree advert earlier this week and I’m very glad I did. I visited Steve’s workshop today and within a couple of hours he’d sorted out niggling issues on three of my guitars. It’s truly great to meet someone who provides such a fantastic service without charging the earth and who is prepared to offer honest and friendly advice.

All in all, I’m a very satisfied new customer and today’s visit to SJL definitely won’t be my last.

So, cheers Steve! And thanks for a good deal on the lovely blue Johnson ‘S’-type too :)

  25. I’ve been struggling with my Gibson Hummingbird for about 18 months. The action felt too high making it hard to play – the original retailer wasn’t particularly helpful. It was very much a question of this is how they are. I was starting to think maybe this wasn’t the guitar for me! Anyway I took it Steve earlier today and he sorted within the hour while I enjoyed breakfast at the cafe over the way. The action is spot on – low and easy to play. It feels like a different instrument.
I would highly recommend – great service at a bargain price.

    • Thanks for the nice comments. It makes me very angry how retailers don’t bother to set up and give any after sales service even on high end instruments. I know profit margins are being slowly eroded but, if you look after customers they will return…

  26. as a fairly inexperienced guitarist I knew somthing was wrong with my seagull accoustic but not what. within an hour steve had sorted it, lowered the action, found a loose strut I knew nothing about, sorted that and re alignned the truss rod. its now a pleasure to play rather than frustration setting in. thanks a million cheers john

  27. 2 of my basses have found a new lease of life gigging after 15 years in the cupboard. Steve serviced them both up a treat, not sure what he did with the electrics but that hum that’s been there over a decade has gone and the necks feel like they are brand new. Thanks for a quick turnaround and a very courteous and professional service. I’ve always been a bit funny giving my guitars to people but they were in very safe hands with Steve.

    I’ll definitely be back,

    Thanks Lee

  28. Just got a new Epiphone EJ200 and the action on it was really high, so brought it to Steve to adjust it, he never lets me down, its playing like a dream now, worth every penny, always goes that extra mile for you as well and always gives great advice.

Steve has also adjusted a Fender acoustic for me in the past which again was perfect, My nephew took his new Epiphone to have it adjusted and he is really made up with it now and says its so much easier to play as he is a beginner.

Couldn’t recommend higher, and takes a real passion in what he does. Thank you

  29. I made my own acoustic guitar years ago and after a number of changes to the bridge and fingerboard it really needed setting up. I asked Steve to do the set up for me and when I got it back it played like a dream. I’m going to be playing this one a lot more now. Thanks Steve!
